Different research study has shown that early grade reading competency is critical for continued retention and success in future grades. Though it is clear that children’s futures are not solely dependent on reading instruction, reading is a critical and necessary precondition for skill development. Children who do not develop reading skills during the primary grades are on a lifetime trajectory of limited educational progress and therefore limited economic opportunities. However, textbook provision in our context is inadequate, let alone provision of supplemental reading materials. Right to Education has created a provision for library in every school but practically in most of the school it is not in place and in some place it is not properly used.
In this context YCDA in collaboration with My Book Buddy programme in few Primary and Secondary Schools of Boudh district with anobjective to strengthen the reading habits of the children. My Book Buddy is a Netherland based foundation who provided support in setting the My Book Buddy programme.
Major Objectives of the programme is to stimulate children's reading by children's libraries to set up in remote rural schools. Each class has access to a mobile, lockable bookcase with books geared to the target group. The books are lent by the teacher to the children that they can read at home.
